Expert's advices - silicone and acrylic sealants

Preparation of sealed bases

  • Glass, glazed surfaces, enamelled surfaces
    The surface should be clean, dry, without impurities like oil, lubricants, dust etc. It is not recommended to clean with detergents, soap or water. The surfaces should be degreased (Lakma - Profi - remover for silicone).
  • Concrete, cement mortars, plasters, lime, marble, granite, brick, asbestos-cement
    The surface should be clean, dry, without impurities like oil, lubricants, dust etc. If it is needed, the surfaces can be also cleaned with wire brush or sand blasted. For better adhesion of silicones to base we recommended to use Lakma Profi - Primer coat remover 1414.
  • Metals, rolled aluminium, anodized aluminium, copper, lead, mild steel, stainless steel
    The surfaces should be degreased. For cleaning use acetone, kerosene, xylene or other solvent. Rusty steel surfaces clean with wire brush, oxidized - copper and lead sand blast. For better adhesion we recommend Lakma Profi - Primer coat remover 1413.
  • Plastics, PVC - hard, acrylic, polycarbonate
    The surface should be clean, dry, without impurities like oil, lubricants, dust etc. For better adhesion to those plastics we recommend to use Lakma Profi - Primer coat remover 1415.

Methods of making silicone sealants

Depending on place and technology of realization, there are used methods of applying silicone with scraping or without scraping and with or without protection of the edges from dirt. The first method guarantees aesthetic look of a joint and its complete filling. However it requires additional cost of labour by protecting edges (doesn't apply to e.g. wooden windows) and use of appropriate preparations facilitating scraping - Lakma-Profi - wetting agent for silicone. Application of washing-up liquid or glass cleaner can cause damaging surfaces of silicone and its faster soil and lengthens the time of crosslinking of silicone mass. To protect sealed or joined surfaces from making dirty it is recommended to use paper self-adhesive tapes. The ending of a cartouche or a foil with a clip should be cut with a knife or pincers (foil), screw on the cartouche an applicator and after removing the protecting ending from applicator, cut its ending at a right angle and to appropriate diameter size. After putting on the cartouche or foil on a gun, by gradually increasing pulling on a trigger receive equal outflow of sealing mass.

In case of scraping, the surface of silicone should be a bit moistened with haze of water solution of Lakma Profi- wetting agent for silicone from an atomizer, remembering that water unfavourably influences on not hardened silicone. Next with a chosen for this type of joint spatula for silicones, scrape its excess and smooth the joint. Just after levelling silicone mass it is necessary to carefully remove protecting tape. In case of industrial appliances in production technology (e.g. timberwork, aquaria, kitchens) it is necessary to foresee time needed to get by silicone preliminary mechanical resistance, enabling transport, assembly etc. The time can be different for different types and applications of silicones, therefore in case of having any doubts we recommend consultations with LAKMA technical advisors.


Examples of seals realizations

By repairs of wooden widows

Because of perfect adhesion of neutral silicones (NO11, NO11R, NO11A, N Professional) to wooden and painted bases it is possible to make seals of windows in places, where were used self-adhesive tapes before. Advantages of this type of seal are: - greater resistance than the used so far - better tightness because of self-acting fitting of seal thickness depending on air gap between sealed elements. The fitting is connected with a stage of seal shaping. This stage takes place after application of sealing mass on one of sealed , appropriately prepared surfaces. The second surfaces should be protected with a separating layer e.g. polymer foil stretch type. After closing the window (in phase before hardening the silicone mass) phase of shaping the seal takes place, which lasts approx. 2mm/twenty-four hours (in case of silicone NO11R 6-8 mm/24 h). After hardening of silicone remove separating foil and with use of a sharp knife cut the excess of the seal. The seal can be modified by applying additionally silicone layer on the hardened basic seal.

By preparing seals in machine parts (covers)

On appropriately prepared sealed surface (degreased and cleaned) silicone mass is applied. The second (cooperating) part should be covered with a separating layer (polymer foil stretch type). During binding elements it is necessary to pay attention to a fact, that the would-be seal should work in compressed state, what can be achieved by not screwing completely the sealed elements (in phase of shaping the seal).
